From Patient Advocate to Subject Matter Expert

Mathurin NAPOLY / matnapo

Patient advocates are gaining prominence and increasingly becoming influential players in shaping health policy. With the rise of health populism and a heightened focus on patient-centric care, their voices have gained significant weight in the political arena as their advocacy can often translate into voter turnout and support. Patient advocates bring a unique perspective to the table, drawing from personal experiences as patients themselves and as advocates for others with similar conditions. This combination of lived experiences and a deep understanding of the healthcare system positions patient advocates as subject matter experts capable of driving meaningful change in health policy.

The most impactful approach for advocates to instigate amendments in health policy is by strategically aligning their championing causes with the voting patterns. Political figures pay more attention when electoral results are at stake. Therefore, it’s essential that patient advocates enhance their efforts by urging fellow patients suffering from similar conditions and health challenges to participate in the voting process. By stressing on choosing candidates who will genuinely prioritize their medical necessities while endorsing healthcare legislation catering to those exact needs, these individuals can significantly influence health policies.

One of the key reasons patient advocates are gaining traction is the shift towards health populism. In an era where patients are demanding increased transparency, inclusivity, and patient-centered care, their voices are being amplified. It’s now heard loud and clear in voting booths across the country. Politicians, recognizing the power of this movement, are more inclined to listen to patient advocates and consider their input when formulating health policies, particularly if they know votes are at stake. Patient advocates have the advantage of firsthand experience and understanding of the intricacies of the healthcare system, giving them a unique perspective that cannot be ignored. More over, advocates have credibility among others with similar conditions and can encourage voter turnout.

However, many patient advocates are reluctant to speak out in such a manner or are unwilling to correlate their advocacy with voter turnout. This only hurts the advocates themselves. Patient advocates should acknowledge that their personal experiences make them subject matter experts in imparting change onto health policy makers and politicians. Their insights into the realities of living with a particular condition or navigating the healthcare system provide invaluable knowledge that can shape policy decisions. They possess an understanding that policymakers, whose decision-making processes may be detached from the everyday realities of patients, may lack.

To effectively transition from patient advocate to subject matter expert, patient advocates must continuously educate themselves on healthcare policy, research, and best practices. By staying informed and up to date on the latest developments in the field, patient advocates can enhance their credibility and strengthen their ability to advocate for change. They should actively engage in dialogues with policymakers, sharing their unique perspectives and proposing solutions that align with patient needs.

However, merely suggesting remedies and policies focused on patient well-being will yield minimal results unless patient advocates devise a rewarding-and-punishing incentive system. This strategy must enunciate to political figures that their electorate support hinges upon their willingness to champion these causes.

In this vein, patient advocates should also collaborate with like-minded individuals and organizations. By joining forces, they can amplify their voices, pool resources, and create a collective platform from which to advocate for change. Simply put, larger numbers create larger voting blocks. Together, patient advocates can ensure that their demands are heard, and their proposed solutions are taken seriously by policymakers.

While the journey from patient advocate to subject matter expert requires dedication and continuous learning, the impact patient advocates can have on shaping health policy is immense. By leveraging their personal experiences and comprehensive understanding of the healthcare system, they possess the power to bring about transformative change. Patient advocates are the catalysts for a more patient-centric and inclusive healthcare system, where the needs and voices of individuals are prioritized and acknowledged by policymakers. It is up to them to seize this opportunity, embrace their role as subject matter experts, and pave the way for a brighter future in healthcare.

Along the way, be sure to remind policymakers about your voting power!
