Bedside Manner: What It Means and Why It’s Important

Many people may become doctors, nurses, or other health-care professionals because they enjoy the science or technology aspects of the industry. However, health-care providers can never forget that dealing with people and interpersonal relationships are fundamental to their jobs. Below, we’ll discuss bedside manner, including what it truly means and why it’s so important for health-care providers.

What Bedside Manner Means for a Health-Care Professional

Practically everyone has heard of the term bedside manner, but how many could define what it is and what it means for health-care professionals? Bedside manner is more than just saying nice things to a patient—it’s about conducting yourself professionally and positively around the patient and their family.

Bedside manners are how health-care providers promote trust and understanding between themselves and the patient. Good bedside manners foster trust and facilitate understanding, ensuring that healthcare system management is patient-centered and compassionate.

Why Bedside Manner Is Important

Encourages Transparency

One of the reasons bedside manner is so important for health-care professionals is that it opens communication channels and promotes transparency between patient and provider.

If a health-care provider approaches the patient professionally and positively, the patient is more likely to feel heard and encouraged to share. This means a more transparent patient-doctor relationship. This transparency is crucial for tailoring treatment plans and improving outcomes, which is a foundational aspect of the medical home model.

Makes Patients More Comfortable and Trusting

Patients often feel apprehensive or fearful when receiving treatment—especially if their health-care provider’s bedside manner is brusque and curt. A doctor or nurse with a quality bedside manner will ease the worrying of many patients, making them more comfortable.

An anxious and frightened patient is more difficult to treat and can even exacerbate whatever symptoms they’re dealing with. A comfortable patient makes the work and treatment easier for everyone. If you want to improve your relationship with your patients, practicing active listening is a good strategy.

Now, you should better understand what bedside manner means and why it’s important to nurses, doctors, and other professionals. Health-care providers must remember that their patients are regular people with natural feelings of fear and apprehensiveness. A quality bedside manner can improve the effectiveness of treatment and should be an essential tool in a health-care provider’s repertoire. Healthcare system management professionals must ensure that training in these soft skills is accessible to all medical staff to maintain high standards of care across the board.
