Travel Precautions for Thanksgiving 2023

Jed Owens

As Thanksgiving 2023 approaches, families and friends eagerly anticipate reuniting and celebrating together. However, amidst the ongoing challenges posed by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), COVID-19, and influenza, it is crucial to prioritize safety and take necessary travel precautions. We provide guidance on navigating travel during this holiday season, highlighting recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and emphasizing the importance of staying informed and vigilant.

Before embarking on any travel plans, it is essential to stay updated on the latest travel advisories and healthcare policy alerts issued by the CDC. The CDC’s Health Alert Network (HAN) serves as a valuable resource, providing real-time information on emerging public health threats and travel-related guidelines. Familiarize yourself with the specific recommendations for your destination and mode of travel, as guidelines may vary depending on the region’s COVID-19 transmission rates and vaccination coverage.

When considering travel options for Thanksgiving 2023, it is crucial to assess the risks associated with different modes of transportation. Airlines have implemented various safety measures, including enhanced cleaning protocols, mandatory mask-wearing, and improved air filtration systems. However, crowded airports and close proximity to fellow passengers may increase the risk of exposure. If opting for air travel, ensure compliance with all airline and  healthcare policy guidelines, including mask usage and vaccination requirements.

Alternatively, car travel offers more control over the environment and reduces exposure to large crowds. Plan your route in advance, considering rest stops and potential areas of congestion. Pack essential supplies such as hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes, and face masks to maintain personal hygiene during rest breaks. Additionally, limit the number of passengers in the vehicle to ensure adequate physical distancing.

Regardless of the chosen mode of travel, prioritizing health policy and hygiene practices is paramount. Adhere to the CDC’s recommendations, which include frequent hand washing, wearing masks in public settings, and maintaining physical distance from individuals outside your household. Carry a sufficient supply of face masks, hand sanitizers, and disinfectant wipes to use during travel and at your destination.

To further mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission, consider getting vaccinated before traveling. Vaccination not only protects you but also contributes to the overall community’s safety. Stay informed about the vaccination requirements and recommendations for your destination, as some regions may have specific entry requirements for travelers.

Additionally, consider getting tested for COVID-19 before and after your trip, even if you are fully vaccinated. Testing can help identify asymptomatic cases and prevent the spread of the virus to vulnerable individuals, such as elderly family members or those with underlying health conditions. Follow the CDC’s guidelines on testing and quarantine protocols to ensure a safe and responsible Thanksgiving gathering.

Given the evolving nature of the pandemic, it is crucial to remain flexible and prepared for unexpected changes. Monitor the COVID-19 situation in your destination and be prepared to adjust your plans accordingly. Stay in touch with your airline or travel provider to stay informed about any changes or cancellations. Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers trip interruptions or cancellations due to COVID-19-related issues.

Thanksgiving 2023 holds the promise of reuniting with loved ones, but it is essential to prioritize safety and take necessary travel precautions. By staying informed about the latest CDC guidelines, choosing the right mode of travel, practicing good hygiene, and considering vaccination and testing requirements, we can navigate this holiday season responsibly. Let us embrace the spirit of Thanksgiving while safeguarding the health and well-being of ourselves and those around us through active healthcare advocacy.

Clinicians increasingly encounter patients using or requesting peptide-based therapies sourced through compounding pharmacies. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has identified a subset of bulk drug substances, including certain peptides, that may present significant safety risks when used in compounded formulations. The clinical question is whether these regulatory signals reflect meaningful patient-level risk and how they should influence prescribing behavior. This matters because compounded peptides often sit outside traditional approval pathways, creating uncertainty around quality, dosing consistency, and safety. Understanding...
