Dr. Edwin Leap is an emergency physician with 24 years of experience. He is a well known communicator and a successful columnist, writing about everything from medicine to family, faith to culture and everything in between.

Life in Emergistan: Sometimes EDs are the Only Solution (but Rarely the Best One)

KevinMD: Vaccine hesitancy is complex

Select writings from Dr. Leap, in his own words:

This is a piece I wrote originally for EM News, back before they had anything in archives online. It was picked up by many sources over the years and in a couple of places is required reading for medical students. Things like this take on rather a life of their own. I’m OK with that.  Although older, it may be one of my most important bits of writing ever.

BIIB080 in Mild Alzheimer’s Disease: What a Phase 1b Exploratory Clinical Analysis Can—and Cannot—Tell Us

Can lowering tau biology translate into a clinically meaningful slowing of decline in people with early symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease? That is the practical question behind BIIB080, an intrathecal antisense therapy designed to reduce production of tau protein by targeting the tau gene transcript. In a phase 1b program originally designed for safety and dosing, investigators later examined cognitive, functional, and global outcomes as exploratory endpoints. The clinical question matters because current disease-modifying options primarily target amyloid, while tau pathology tracks...
